Vision
Ensure that Privacy Practices and Privacy Programs Evolve to Help Promote and Maintain our Nation's Core Values.
The Federal Privacy Council will help to ensure that as Federal agencies carry out the missions of the Federal Government, they do so in a manner that honors and respects the personal information entrusted to the Federal Government by the American people and other individuals. Today, the United States is in the midst of a revolution of innovation and opportunity based on the explosive growth of the digital economy and the wide-scale adoption of new technology. To keep pace with this change, the Federal Privacy Council will identify more effective and innovative ways to help protect privacy across the Government while supporting efforts to deliver better and more efficient services for the American people.
Purpose
Build on Existing Interagency Efforts to Protect Privacy.
The Federal Privacy Council is the principal interagency forum to improve the privacy practices of agencies and entities acting on their behalf. The work of the Federal Privacy Council shall strengthen protections of people's personal information and privacy rights across the Federal Government. To achieve this purpose, the Federal Privacy Council shall:
- Support interagency efforts to protect privacy and provide expertise and assistance to agencies
- Expand the skill and career development opportunities of agency privacy professionals
- Improve the management of agency privacy programs by identifying and sharing lessons learned and best practices
- Promote collaboration between and among agency privacy professionals to reduce unnecessary duplication of efforts and to ensure the effective, efficient, and consistent implementation of privacy policy government-wide
Committees, Working Groups, and Communities of Practice
Council Committees
Agency Implementation Committee
Collaboration strengthens the Federal privacy community. This committee's mission is to provide a forum for Federal agency staff to discuss issues and share knowledge related to privacy program governance and privacy risk management.
Federal Privacy Workforce Committee
The greatest asset of a Federal privacy program is its people. This committee supports Senior Agency Officials for Privacy in hiring, retaining, training, and developing an effective and efficient workforce of privacy professionals that enables agency mission success.
Public Affairs and Community Engagement Committee
The Public Affairs and Community Engagement Committee fosters the growth and vibrancy of the Federal privacy community by raising awareness of Council-related opportunities for leadership and professional growth. In addition, the Committee supports the Council's efforts to engage and educate the public and the Federal privacy community through the Council's website, newsletters, and events.
Technology and Innovation Committee
To enable the transformation to a 21st-century government that serves the American people more effectively, agencies must embrace and leverage cutting-edge technologies, new digital services, and advances in data analytics. This committee addresses issues at the intersection of privacy, technology, and policy with the overall goal of promoting innovation and enabling the wide-scale adoption of new technologies and services.
Council Communities of Practice
Financial Regulators Privacy Community of Practice
The Financial Regulators Privacy Community of Practice is a cross-agency community of Federal partners with a role to play in providing privacy support to financial regulatory agencies. Financial regulatory agencies are responsible for overseeing the functioning and fairness of financial markets and for preventing and investigating fraud, keeping markets efficient and transparent, and making sure customers and clients are treated fairly.
Data Visualization Community of Practice
The Data Visualization Community of Practice offers a supportive environment to connect with peers, enhance skills, and contribute to impactful data visualization projects across the Federal Government. The Community provides a forum to share best practices, troubleshoot challenges, and collaborate on ongoing projects. This group is open to any Federal employees of Executive Branch agencies interested in participating in a collaborative space dedicated to advancing data visualization efforts that can help tell the story of how agencies implement privacy protections and data governance.
Council Working Groups
Privacy Risk Management Working Group
OMB Circular A-130 requires agencies to implement the Risk Management Framework (RMF) and manage privacy risks across the information system development life cycle. This interagency working group provides a forum for agency privacy professionals to identify and develop best practices for managing privacy risks.
